Facts about Sturgis, South Dakota
Sturgis is notable as the location of one of the largest annual motorcycle events in the world, which is held on the first full week of August. Motorcycle enthusiasts from around the world migrate to this town during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The population during the year is 6,627. But Sturgis population during the rally swells to 500,000 people.
The story behind Sturgis is it was begun in 1938 by a group of Indian Motorcycle riders of the Jackpine Gypsies motorcycle club and was originally held for stunts and races. The club still owns and operates the tracks, hill climb and field areas where the rally is centered. The first event was called the “Black Hills Classic” and consisted of a single race with nine participants and a small audience.
